Coaching for Performance at Wartsila

About

Wärtsilä is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets. The company has operations in nearly 170 locations in 70 countries worldwide. Impact developed two initiatives to instil a coaching culture in Wärtsilä.

Creating a high-performance culture in the business, through the development of coaching skills in a Coaching for Performance programme and the use of a coaching approach in a Leading Teams programme.

Having to anticipate changes in the global marketplace and being able to add value to their customers increasingly, senior leaders in the business recognised that they needed to adapt their business model to remain competitive.

Wärtsilä and Impact have worked in partnership since 2011, delivering an event for the Top 12 of the Services division globally that focused on developing the team to lead a coaching culture.

Coaching for Performance - This programme was designed to enable Wärtsilå managers to take responsibility for creating a ‘high performance culture’ in the business, through the development of coaching skills and the use of a 'coaching approach’.

Leading Teams - The Leading Teams programme aimed to support senior management teams in the implementation and achievement of the team’s business strategy and helped unleash the hidden potential of the team’s resources.

To date, over 230 managers across five continents have taken part in Coaching for Performance workshops. Participants have made significant progress in developing their own coaching capability that works for them in their business context.

Feedback was extremely positive and results indicated a significant improvement across the coaching competencies measured.

"The day was very, very inspiring. We were able to make a real difference to our community partner: SMart, by delivering some really tangible benefits - including sourcing and mentoring admin support, developing a business plan to attract the right calibre of trustees and helping them to source office and gallery/storage space... It was a day of truly appreciating and celebrating life.”

"18 months into the graduate leadership development programme, and I can truly say it has been such a great experience. The activities we have undertaken have ranged from learning presentation skills, understanding your impact in a team, to having a lot of fun along the way with challenging activities, such as white water rafting and rock climbing. The external training we are fortunate enough to receive, as well as on-the-job training has helped me to build on my career."

"The assignment has been so successful for both organisations that they are building upon the work already achieved for a sustainable, ongoing partnership for the future. The partnership with Turning Point is an important element of Scottish & Newcastle's approach to responsible drinking. This project provided an opportunity to practise the skills learnt in the workshops and has enabled our graduates to learn the realities and practicalities of working as a team."
