An In Good Company podcast with David Pope, MD at All Voice Talent
How to find your leadership voice
Today's podcast is a bit different from our norm. We're talking about an aspect of leadership we haven't covered in our 50+ episodes - and yet it's one that every leader has. A voice!

David Pope is a BBC trained voiceover artist and director and the founder of All Voice Talent, Asia’s premier voice coaching organisation. He was the obvious choice for this episode on the leadership voice toolkit. How often do we stop to think about our voice? Do you spend as much time thinking about how you sound as you do on what you are going to say? What does your leadership voice say about you? How do others perceive your leadership, do they want to put their trust in you and follow your lead?
David and Dan’s conversation covers:
- The three-part leadership communication toolkit
- Common vocal pitfalls and how to overcome them
- Tips for virtual presence and vocal variety
- And ends with a practical breathing exercise we can all easily adopt to boost vocal confidence
Why your voice matters in leadership
Leaders are needed to be the face of the company. Nowadays, there’s not just pressure to perform well in their role, but to sound good while doing it. Comms teams are asking them to speak at conferences, to attend panel discussions and record videos. And this coincides with the rise in social media. Typically, a lot of leaders are having to be more aware of their own brand.
The leadership voice toolkit
The leadership voice is a balance. You've got to come across with authority, but you've got to have energy when you deliver. You've got to be a confident speaker, and your voice has to be warm and authentic. Ultimately, you've got to engage, and you've got to inspire. It's about being passionate about what you're speaking about, but keeping it grounded in authority.
Here are three things that should go into the leadership toolkit.
- Voice. Is it engaging? Is it compelling?
- Presence. How you flex to command the attention of single listeners or entire rooms.
- Crafting a message. It’s understanding your audience and delivering a message which moves people to action, which inspires, which educates.
"Just like the camera never lies, the microphone never lies either. In leadership roles, you’ve got to be at peace with your voice -you need to understand its nuances, strengths, and weaknesses."
