Special Broadcasting Service (SBS)
Coaching for Success
Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) are a multilingual and multicultural broadcaster in Australia. For over 30 years, they have provided programmes via radio, television and online services. SBS now employ nearly 800 people representing more than 100 ethnic backgrounds and speaking 80 languages.
Overview
In response to an SBS Employee Opinion Survey, a key goal was identified to create and implement a framework for all employees that would enable and recognize work performance and career development.
Objective
Impact Australia were chosen to work in partnership with SBS’ Human Resources team to design and deliver a Coaching for Success program.
Coaching for Success needed to develop coaching skills, build confidence and support managers to have regular conversations with their staff as part of MyCareer@SBS.
MyCareer@SBS is an annual performance review framework for all employees structured to clarify work expectations, provide development opportunities and assess progress. The assessment is led by employees’ supervisor/manager and results are linked to fair recognition and reward.
Solution
The Coaching for Success program is a practical two-day event closely aligned to SBS core values.
The program introduces effective techniques and tools that participants can apply immediately to everyday coaching conversations with their staff. The program includes:
- Opportunities to coach and be coached on real business issues and receiving feedback to develop personal effectiveness centred around MyCareer conversations
- Building supervisors & manager’s confidence, willingness and motivation to have conversations with their staff on a more regular basis
- Creating a coaching culture, common language and a level of consistency for MyCareer conversations across the organization.
Participants undertake a skills evaluation and incorporate learning into their own development plan for continued improvement. Post program, SBS’ HR team further support participants through internal MyCareer training.
Programme benefits
Participants have applied their people focused coaching skills to the MyCareer process, addressing existing business issues and crucially generating key steps to help others improve their performance and develop their careers.
‘SBS has come along way from the traditional approach of managing people in a public service (broadcaster) organization. Over the last two years our focus has been to improve the quality of management and leadership in a diverse workforce. An overall culture change was needed to ensure that the leadership development solution offered by Impact, gained traction beyond the training days. Management behavior change is critical to ensuring we are able to retain the right skill base to deliver new services in a rapidly changing media world. Coaching for Success, and its aligned leadership expectations are critical to improving our managers, therefore our talent and then our service to audiences.’
