Impact are proud to have subscribed to Business in the Community's Work Inspiration initiative. This project is a national employer-led campaign which aims to make work experience more meaningful, relevant and inspiring for young people. Six students from schools local to our HQ in the Lake District joined us for a week in February 2011.
What is Work Inspiration?
Work Inspiration is basically Work Experience, but the people at Impact International prefer to think of it as not ‘Experience’ in a work place but to be ‘Inspired’ in the work place.
What do you do on Work Inspiration?
Throughout the week you experience different departments of the business. At the start of the week, we were given a bag with an Impact t-shirt, a notepad, pen and a timetable that told us what we were doing and where we were going. It revealed that we would be working outdoors and indoor and completing activities such as cleaning the storeroom and jumping off a 40 ft pole! The whole week is planned and there is never a dull moment where you are doing nothing. All of the Impact employees are willing to help and show you the ropes.
Why should you do your Work Experience at Impact International?
Well, it’s simple. It’s fun! Why go to a placement where all you would do is make tea? Or sitting around doing nothing for hours at a time. Wouldn’t you rather be meeting new people, having new experiences and immersing your self in a real work place? Most of all, wouldn’t you rather be inspired? Impact can teach you that if you have an ambition, you can achieve it, the workers are more than happy to tell you about their work experiences and about their current job.
Is it worth it for schools?
Tell me, would you rather have a bunch of students coming back to school after Work Experience saying that all they did was sit around, not doing anything, having free-reign on Facebook and YouTube and not learning a single thing? Or, would you, as a teacher, prefer to have a bunch of students coming back to school, talking about how action packed, fun, informative and inspiring their placement was. Furthermore encouraging more students to go the next year, thus, creating a bond between Impact International and your school. Plus, most of the students visiting come back feeling more relaxed to know that you don’t have to know what you want to be when you’re older and that there are many different jobs to be done within a company that doesn’t all include office-work.
Basically, Work Inspiration at Impact International is awesome and we would definitely want to come back!
