Carbon reduction deadline approaches
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is the UK's mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme. Administered by the Environment Agency, the scheme started in April 2010 and is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It has been designed to raise awareness in large organisations, especially at senior level, and to encourage changes in behaviour and infrastructure.
Around 5,000 UK companies will have to register fully and about 20,000 firms will be required to participate in some way. With the 30th September registration deadline just around the corner, those eligible companies who fail to sign up face hefty and increasing fines. What does it mean for HR?
Many companies will face a sudden rush to implement the scheme. Skills will need to be acquired and behaviours developed in order to comply with policies and procedures.
Results will be published in league table format, publicly demonstrating ability to cut emissions. This brings a potentially huge impact on reputation, corporate social responsibility and employer branding awareness. Success in the rankings will rely to a large extent on engaging employees in the effort to cut emissions and developing capacity for leadership, management and innovation that will facilitate and embed a new energy efficient mindset.
Impact are well placed to work in partnership with you to not only improve and implement your carbon reduction strategy but to explore the strategic opportunities that will emerge from this change in legislation.
