Sometimes the only way to learn how to do something is to do it.

But when we are dealing with a sharp learning edge, when the consequences of failure a substantial (and potentially very public) then we might step back from the opportunity to learn and grow.

We don’t do it.

And we come up with all sorts of rationales and reasons why we don’t.

That is why simulations are so useful.

Designing effective leadership simulations isn’t easy, it takes skill to finely balance judgements on complexity, on pace, on the scale of the challenges and the directness of the feedback.

Effective simulations also need brilliant facilitators who can pull the learning through the experience.
